World Press Freedom Day: Keeping Power in Check the Protection of Journalists and Media Workers

The United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in cooperation with the 19 Member States composing the Group of Friends for the Protection of Journalists in New York invites you to an event in commemoration of “World Press Freedom Day 2018”. Theme: “Keeping Power in Check: the Protection of Journalists and Media Workers”. The event will also feature remarks from Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and CPJ’s Deputy Executive Director, Robert Mahoney. Points of discussion: • Participation of media workers in the struggle to uphold rule of law and human rights and how this affects their safety • Risks vis-à-vis incidents of threats and attacks against media workers • Determining awareness, knowledge, and attitudes toward media workers’ roles, relevance, and safety • Steps needed to ensure better safety for locally employed media workers • Role of the media outlets • Role the UN have to play in ensuring compliance with the obligation to protect journalists and media workers When: Thursday, 3 May 2018 High-Level Opening Session: 10 to 11 a.m. Panel Discussion: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Where:Conference Room 1, United Nations Headquarters Click here to RSVP
