CPJ welcomes Carlos Martinez de la Serna as program director

New York, March 27, 2018–The Committee to Protect Journalists is pleased to announce that Carlos Martinez de la Serna has joined CPJ in the role of program director. Martinez de la Serna will serve as chief strategist of CPJ’s regional programs and as a member of its senior management team.

“Carlos Martinez de la Serna will play a vital role in helping CPJ to advance press freedom globally and in driving its research and documentation regionally,” said CPJ Deputy Executive Director Robert Mahoney. “During this challenging time for journalists, we look forward to increasing our response to press freedom violations around the world.”

Prior to CPJ, Martinez de la Serna worked as a reporter and digital journalist in the U.S., Spain, and Japan, covering issues including current affairs, biomedical research, and North Korea’s nuclear program. He is a founding member of the mapping startup Carto, co-founder of the nonprofit organization porCausa, and a former director of digital innovation at Univision News. Martinez de la Serna is a research fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University and a former John S. Knight fellow at Stanford University.
