Join a discussion about the increasing challenges Brazil’s media face, especially at a time of political and economic turbulence in the nation’s modern democracy, including legislative and judicial actions and continued violence against journalists. Experts will discuss the relationships between the media, the public and government, assess the state of free speech in Brazil and elsewhere in Latin America, how journalists are coping with the restrictions, the role of technology and social media, and strategies for preserving and solidifying a credible press. This discussion is part of the “Global Center Events on Campus | 2016” series, sponsored by Columbia Global Centers | Rio de Janeiro and Columbia Global Centers.

Ricardo Gandour is the Director of Brazilian media group Estado de S. Paulo. He is a Visiting Scholar at Columbia Journalism School.
Agnès Callamard is the Director of Columbia University’s Center for Global Freedom of Expression.
Carlos Lauria is the Program Director and Senior Program Coordinator for The Americas at the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Bruce Shapiro is the Executive Director of the Dart Center for Trauma in Journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
