Journalist detained in South Sudan for three days

Security agents arrested Nasir Fazol, a reporter and printing technician for the independent daily Citizen, on September 5, 2012, and released him three days later without charging him, according to news reports.

Citizen Chief Editor Nhial Bol told CPJ that Fazol was held at the National Intelligence and Security Service without access to a lawyer.

Bol said he believed the detention was an attempt to stop the production of the newspaper since Fazol assisted in the printing process. He said that Citizen was printed despite Fazol being detained and that it did not contain any politically sensitive articles.

Fazol was released after his wife and the chief editor visited, according to local journalists. No reason was provided for the detention, Fazol said.
