CPJ and Foreign Press Association host press briefing on Nicaragua

New York, Oct 25, 2021–Ahead of the November 7 Nicaraguan general election, which is taking place amid increasingly dire circumstances for press freedom, the Committee to Protect Journalists will host a press briefing with the Foreign Press Association (FPA) on threats to journalists in the country.

The need for timely and reliable information is heightened around elections, yet Nicaraguan authorities continue to ramp up their attacks on the press in an effort to silence critical voices. Juan Lorenzo Holmann, publisher of La Prensa, and journalist Miguel Mendoza have been jailed for months now, and dozens of other journalists have been called into the public prosecutor’s office for questioning. Many journalists have fled the country, forced to work in exile.

WHAT: Joint press briefing from CPJ and FPA on the state of press freedom in Nicaragua, featuring panelists Natalie Southwick, CPJ Latin America and the Caribbean program coordinator and Nicaraguan journalists Cindy Regidor and Yamlek Mojica. The panel will be moderated by FPA President Ian Williams.

WHEN: October 28, 2021, 11:00 a.m. EDT.

WHERE: RSVP for Zoom link.

Journalists interested in attending the briefing can register here and call-in details will be provided upon registration. To arrange an interview with a CPJ expert, email [email protected]. Read CPJ’s reporting on Nicaragua here.
