A bus transporting journalists and volunteers between Olympic venues in Rio de Janeiro was hit by a projectile on August 9, 2016. Two of the bus windows were smashed, and at least two people on board were injured by flying glass, organizers said in a statement.
Luiz Fernando Corrêa, the head of security for the Rio2016, said preliminary investigations showed it was a rock that hit the bus. More inquiries were under way, he added.
Sherryl “Lee” Micaelson, a former U.S. soldier covering the games for a basketball publication, was on the bus, and said she saw a bullet and heard a gunshot.
One of the people injured was identified as Arthur Zhol , a reporter from Belarus. Zhol told the Brazilian media group UOL he was considering returning home after the scare.
Organizers said they would increase the security along the route. Soldiers are among the 85,000 people providing security for the games, and have been patrolling routes frequently used by athletes, journalists, and others visiting for the event.
Rio de Janeiro, the first South American city to host the Olympic Games, was the site of 14 murders a day in the first six months of 2016.
