Somali journalist attacked outside home

Unknown gunmen shot the Mogadishu Bureau Chief for the independent, U.K.-based Somali Channel Television on October 12, 2014, outside his home in the Howlwadaag neighborhood in the capital, Mogadishu, according to local journalists and news reports.

Abdirisak Jama had just returned from work and was sitting outside his home when gunmen drove past in a vehicle and shot him repeatedly in the stomach, local journalists told CPJ. The gunmen fled the scene.

Abdirisak recovered after a four-hour operation at Madina Hospital, local journalists said.

Abdirisak is known for his rare access to the Al-Shabaab militant group, according to news reports. He was also a member of a committee appointed by the ministry of information that reviewed Somalia’s media bill, according to a statement issued by Information Minister Mustafa Duhulow. He has also criticized the bill in the past, reports said.

The minister condemned the attack and has launched an investigation, according to the official statement.
