In response to Russian press reports that the family of Anna Politkovskaya has appealed for further investigation into the suspected role of three men in her murder before sending them back to court, we issued the following statement…
“We support the Politkovskaya family’s appeal for a renewed, vigorous investigation,” CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova said. “The prosecution needs to strengthen its case before re-trying the defendants. More importantly, authorities need to focus their resources toward identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting all of Anna’s killers–including the gunman, the middle men, and the masterminds of her assassination.”
