Missing, Not Forgotten.

Too many journalists around the globe have gone missing since CPJ began keeping records.

Dozens have been snatched from their families, their lives and their work suspended in time. Official indifference and failure to investigate these disappearances cast a chill on other reporters and devastate the journalists’ families, who are often left in the dark with little to no support.

Vanished Journalists Around the World

65 journalists are missing globally as of August 2023. This map shows the location where each of these missing journalists was last seen. See the most updated data in CPJ’s database.

Across the globe, CPJ is monitoring and reporting on at least 65 cases of missing journalists. Nearly one-third of them disappeared while covering armed conflict in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen. And in Mexico alone, at least 16 journalists have gone missing since 2005.

Families deserve answers about their loved ones, and local authorities have a responsibility to conduct investigations using all the tools at their disposal to find these missing journalists.
