July 7, 2013, in Puntland, Somalia
Two unidentified gunmen shot Liban Abdullahi at least four times at around 7 p.m. near his home in the Wajadir village area, north Galkayo, in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, according to local journalists and news reports. The assailants fled the scene before police arrived, the journalists said. Liban died from his injuries upon reaching a local hospital, local journalists said.
Liban was working as a correspondent for the newly launched, U.K.-based Kalsan satellite television station. Local journalists said they suspected Liban could have been targeted for his reporting on upcoming council elections but did not single out a particular story as a potential motive for the killing.
Puntland was scheduled to have its first democratic council elections in mid-July, in which four registered political associations would compete for district council seats, followed by parliamentary elections in late 2013, according to news reports.
Liban, who was also known as "Liban Qaran," had previously worked for Radio SBC (Somali Broadcasting Corporation), Radio Daljir, Codka Nabadda ("Voice of Peace") and Royal Television from 2003 to recent, local journalists said.
He is survived by a wife and five children.
Motive Unconfirmed: CPJ is investigating to determine whether the death was work-related.
