Mesquita, host of a news program on TV Ouro Verde, was murdered in Ouro Preto do Oeste, Rondonia State, by three unidentified gunmen. He had just finished recording "Espaço Aberto," a program that featured politically sensitive topics, such as the safety of public transportation. Local journalists are convinced he was killed in retaliation for his work.
