Edward Smith

Smith, a Sierra Leonean citizen and a reporter for the BBC, was killed while traveling with West African peacekeeping soldiers when Rebel United Front forces ambushed their vehicles. Smith had covered the northeastern region (Makeni and Kono districts) of Sierra Leone since the Armed Forces Ruling Council took power in May 1997. He had previously worked as a reporter for the independent newspaper Vision and as editor of The Storm newspaper.
