Hernández Pérez

Radio Campesina

July 16, 1997, in Tiquisate, Guatemala

Pérez, a newsreader at Radio Campesina in Tiquisate, Escuintla, was ambushed by a group of heavily armed men as he was leaving the station in the morning and killed instantly by gunfire. Another employee of the station, Haroldo Escobar Noriega, a messenger, was also killed. The motive for the murders is not known.


Motive Unconfirmed: CPJ is investigating to determine whether the death was work-related.
