Solovyov, a freelance photojournalist and a contributor to the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, was fatally shot in central Moscow. Two years earlier, he had published a portfolio on Moscow mafia groups in three German newspapers. He was in Germany discussing story ideas two weeks before his death.
