Russian authorities close Shchekochikhin case

We issued the following statement after Russia's Prosecutor-General's Office closed a criminal investigation into the unexplained death of investigative journalist Yuri Shchekochikhin in 2003...

"Yuri Shchekochikhin died in mysterious circumstances as he was uncovering high-level corruption," said CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova. "This makes the decision to halt the investigation deeply troubling. We call on the Prosecutor-General's Office to provide a detailed and public explanation of its decision immediately."
