Beyond the pardons, press freedom still under threat in Egypt

Today the Committee to Protect Journalists hosted a press conference for three Al-Jazeera journalists who have been convicted in absentia in Egypt. The journalists expressed solidarity with other members of the press who have been charged by the Egyptian government, and called on President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to intervene in their cases.

Al-Jazeera station raided, 3 others shut in Egypt

New York, July 3, 2013–Authorities in Egypt’s new military-run government raided Al-Jazeera’s Egyptian station today, disrupting its service, and shut down at least three stations supportive of Mohamed Morsi in a worrying series of moves that seemed designed to cut off coverage of pro-Morsi events, according to news accounts.

At least 18 journalists assaulted or arrested in Egypt

New York, May 4, 2012–At least 18 journalists have been assaulted, injured, or arrested in the past three days while covering clashes between protesters and thugs and uniformed military personnel in front of the defense ministry in the neighborhood of Abbasiya in Cairo, according to news reports.
