About the database

About this database
This database reflects reporting done by the Committee to Protect Journalists since 1992, the first year the organization began compiling comprehensive information on journalists killed worldwide. Each case has been previously reported by CPJ and has been updated as new details emerged.

The database was compiled over seven months by CPJ consultant Matthew Hansen under the direction of CPJ Journalist Security Coordinator Frank Smyth. It was released in coordination with a series of events and reports marking CPJ’s 25th anniversary.

Cases in the database are arranged by year. Within each year, cases are arranged by the nation in which the journalist was killed. Cases were analyzed according to 21 categories based on previous and new reporting by CPJ.

By clicking on the year (such as 1992) in the far left-hand column, one may reach narrative capsules for each journalist killed that year. If you have information about any of these cases, please e-mail CPJ at [email protected] or call CPJ at 465-1004.
