CPJ is excited to join Access Now’s 2018 RightsCon Toronto summit, May 16-18, which explores the intersection of human rights and technology among a global community of policymakers, human rights activists, business leaders, engineers and government representatives. This year it is being held in Toronto instead of the United States because of the travel ban, which affects journalists and activists from several countries. CPJ is organizing two sessions: one will examine the impact of zero-rating on press freedom the other one brings together journalists and politicians to discuss online violence against women. CPJ’s Director of Advocacy, Courtney Radsch will give a lighting talk on the future of press freedom online, and speak on a panel about the ways to counter disinformation online, bring in the perspective of journalists and press freedom into a panel on digital rights in the Middle East, and bring in the perspective of journalists, particularly women and those covering gender issues, to a discussion on the surveillance of marginalised groups. RightsCon is the pre-eminent digital rights policy forum and a critical space to ensure the perspective of journalists is included and the impact of tech policy and innovation on press freedom understood.
