When journalists are silenced, society suffers. As of December 2017, a record 262 journalists were in jail for their work around the world. Prison is isolating -- over the years CPJ has reported on journalists denied access to their lawyers and families, on allegations of torture and abuse, and on the sheer lengths to which authorities will go to stop a story. Now, you can help keep the journalists' stories alive and their spirits up.

CPJ's #FreeThePress campaign is designed to bring awareness, build support, and inspire action on behalf of journalists imprisoned for their work.

Learn their stories, use digital postcards to send messages of hope, and join the campaign to stand in solidarity and advocate for their immediate release.

Send a message of support to an imprisoned journalist - raise your voice, and help CPJ to #FreeThePress!

You can also participate in the #FreeThePress conversation on Facebook and Twitter and sign up for CPJ's newsletter to get the latest updates.

Thank you to all who supported CPJ's 2018 #FreeThePress campaign. Messages of support can make a world of difference to a journalist behind bars. Stay involved with CPJ and learn more about our campaigns here.
