CPJ welcomes journalist's release in Sri Lanka

We issued the following statement today in response to international news reports that a Sri Lankan court released journalist Nadesapillai Vithyatharan without charge after nearly two months in jail for allegedly supporting a terrorist attack on the capital, Colombo...

"Vithyatharan's release is welcome, of course, but he should never have been imprisoned in the first place," said CPJ Asia Program Coordinator Bob Dietz. "His detention was nothing but intimidation of the media by a government that still holds three journalists behind bars."
