Mexican newspaper editor abducted, robbed, and beaten in Guerrero state

Unidentified gunman on December 23, 2017, robbed Antonio Julián Chepe, the editorial director of regional newspaper Diario Alternativo, stripped him naked, and threatened to kill him, the journalist told CPJ.

Lomé, January 8, 2018–Nigerian authorities should immediately release Timothy Elombah, editor of the news website Elombah, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today. Security forces arrested the journalist at his home in Nnewi, a city in Anambra state, on January 1, 2018, according to his lawyer, Obunike Ohaegbu, and media reports.

Somali authorities arrest local journalist following critical reporting

Nairobi, January 4, 2017–Somali authorities should immediately release Abdishakur Abdullahi Ahmed, also known as Shaasha, who works as a correspondent for the Nairobi-based RTN Somali TV channel and owns a local radio station, City FM, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

New decree shutters two more news outlets The Turkish cabinet on December 24 issued a decree that prompted the closure of Akdeniz Gazetesi and Isparta Çınaraltı Gazetesi, two local newspapers in the southwestern province of Isparta, the daily Evrensel reported. Under the decree, the papers were considered threats to national security, according to Evrensel.
