CPJ calls on Canadian police to allow journalists to freely cover matters of public interest

CPJ writes to the commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to express concern at the treatment of journalists covering protests against the construction of a gas pipeline through Wet’suwet’en territory, and to urge that the RCMP allow them to do their job and report freely on matters of public interest.

New York, March 11, 2020 — Ukrainian authorities should not conduct a criminal investigation into Slidstvo.Info, and should allow its journalists to work freely and without fear of reprisal, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

Nicaraguan journalist Emiliano Chamorro faces police harassment and surveillance

Beginning in 2019, Nicaraguan National Police officers have surveilled and harassed Emiliano Chamorro, director of the digital news outlet El Portavoz Ciudadano and a former reporter at the daily La Prensa, and his family, according to the journalist, who spoke to CPJ in a phone interview.

More than a dozen journalists were harassed or physically attacked while covering riots that broke out in northeast Delhi in late February 2020, according to news reports and journalists and their colleagues, who spoke to CPJ.

Conditions for foreign correspondents in China deteriorated in 2019, the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China (FCCC) annual survey found. The report, published today, noted that for a second year none of the respondents gave a positive response when asked if conditions had improved.
