CPJ concerned by climate for free expression in Nepal
New York, May 3, 2016 — The Committee to Protect Journalists today said it is alarmed by Nepal’s decision to expel Canadian social media user Robert Penner. Immigration authorities revoked Penner’s visa because of his social media posts, which are frequently critical of the government, according to press reports.
Nigerian journalist arrested for news report

CPJ alarmed by WhatsApp block in Brazil
New York, May 2, 2016–The Committee to Protect Journalists is concerned by a judicial order to block WhatsApp in Brazil for 72 hours. A judge ordered telecommunications companies to block the messaging application as of 2 p.m. local time today for failing to turn over data in a criminal investigation, according to press reports.
Reporters at Spain’s ABC face trial for allegedly revealing investigation secrets
Brussels, May 2, 2016–A Madrid court has ruled that Cruz Morcillo and Pablo Muñoz, two journalists at the Spanish daily ABC, should face trial for their reporting on a police wiretap investigation into suspected members of the Italian Camorra crime syndicate, according to news reports and Muñoz.
Iraq withdraws Al-Jazeera’s license

In Nepal, critical journalist Kanak Mani Dixit detained in corruption case
New York, April 25, 2016–The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on authorities in Nepal to immediately release Kanak Mani Dixit, the founding editor of the independent regional news magazine Himal Southasian. The journalist, who has reported critically on the country’s civil war, has been harassed and detained previously by authorities.
