New York, April 25, 2026—Journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin has been reunited with his family and is in a place of safety, a legal team acting for his sisters said on Saturday.

The award-winning U.S.-Kuwaiti journalist was detained on March 3 in Kuwait, where he was visiting family.

“We are delighted that Ahmed Shihab-Eldin has been released from detention and is back with his family,” said CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg. “We hope he and his family are given the space to come to terms with his release and look forward to commenting further soon.”

In a statement, Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC and Kate Gibson, international counsel to Shihab-Eldin’s sisters, said: “We are delighted to confirm that Ahmed Shihab-Eldin has now been released, and has reached a safe location. The family is breathing a huge sigh of relief now that they have finally been reunited. Lara and Luma Eldin have requested that there be no further speculation or comment at this time. They are extremely grateful for everyone’s patience and respect for their privacy as they focus on their brother and his safe return.”
