THREATENED

Two unexploded hand grenades were found at the home of radio commentator Fernando “Dong” Batul, in Puerto Princessa on Palawan Island, according to the Philippines Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility.

CMFR said a letter was found at the gate of Batul’s house threatening to harm his family if he continued with his critical broadcasts. CMFR said Batul had recently angered city officials who had organized contracts for Philippine workers in Taiwan. CMFR also said that the Philippine army was angry with him for earlier interviews he had done with members of the communist New People’s Army. The grenades were safely detonated by police and there were no injuries.
