Syrian journalist killed while covering fighting in Daraya

New York, February 22, 2016 -- Syrian freelance journalist Majid Dirani was killed on February 19 by Syrian military tank shells while covering fighting in a suburb of Damascus, one of his employers, Anadolu Agency, and other news outlets reported.

Majid Dirani, a cofounder of the local Darayya Media Center, was killed on February 19 by a shell from a Syrian military tank while filming the shelling and aerial bombardment of his neighborhood, Daraya, a suburb of Damascus, his colleague and co-founder of the media center, Sultan al-Shami, told CPJ.

Egypt bans Al-Jazeera, detains journalists, raids outlets

New York, August 30, 2013--Egyptian security forces continue to detain and harass journalists working for news outlets critical of the military-led government, particularly Al-Jazeera and its affiliates. Journalists also still face physical threats from protesters, as tensions persist between the government and supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi.
