Iranian security forces arrested Iranian journalist Nasrin Hassani on September 30, 2022.
Hassani covers news of her hometown Bojnourd, in North Khorasan province, for the local state-run newspaper Etefaghyeh and is editor-in-chief of the social media-based outlet East Adventure Press.
The source said Hassani is detained in Bojnourd Central Prison and has not yet been officially charged. CPJ was unable to determine the status of the journalist’s health in prison.
Hassani was arrested in a crackdown on national protests following the death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, after morality police arrested her for allegedly violating the country’s conservative dress law. Authorities arrested dozens of journalists in Iran as the protests over Amini’s death spread across the country. Several were later released on bail.
CPJ emailed Iran’s mission to the United Nations in late 2022 for comment on the cases of imprisoned Iranian journalists but received no response.
