Schmidt, a German freelance journalist who worked with Agence France-Presse and the German newspapers Frankfurter Rundschau and Der Tagesspiegel, and a friend were shot and killed when gunmen opened fire on their car outside the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdish-controlled area of northern Iraq.
