Freelance journalist Ibrahim Abdallah was killed at his home in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, on June 28 or 29, 2024, after the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shelled his house and other buildings in the state capital, according to multiple news reports and a local journalist following the case, who spoke to CPJ on the condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisal.
Since the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF started in mid-April 2023, many journalists have been killed, arrested, injured, displaced, and assaulted.
Abdallah was a freelance journalist who covered the war and political events — including the December 2018 uprising that resulted in the ousting of Sudan’s former President Omar al-Bashir — on his Facebook and YouTube pages, with a combined following of more than 80,000.
CPJ was unable to determine further details about Abdallah’s killing. The local journalist told CPJ they believed RSF was aware of Abdallah’s reporting and might have targeted him for it.
Abdallah’s last video published on Facebook was reporting on the atrocities committed by the RSF in El Fasher, during which he called for a ceasefire between all parties of the war.
CPJ’s emails to the SAF and the RSF about Abdallah’s death did not receive any replies.
