Elles, a freelance photojournalist who drove a taxi to supplement his income, was abducted by three unidentified individuals in Cartagena on March 17 and found assassinated in his taxi the next day. He had been shot several times, and his body showed signs of torture. Local journalists believe that Elles may have been assassinated in reprisal for his photographs of police violence published in the Bogotá daily El Espectador. Only the spare tire of his taxi was missing, making robbery an unlikely motive for the crime.
