El Diario del Fin del Mundo
At around 5 a.m., the building of El Diario del Fin del Mundo (The Newspaper of the End of the World) in the city of Ushuaia, in the southern Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, was set on fire. The blaze destroyed the newsroom and the administrative offices.
Reports by police and the fire department determined that the fire was intentional, according to the local press. Police are treating the incident as a suspected arson attack against the newspaper.
Fulvio Baschera, the daily’s executive director, told CPJ that the fire happened a few days before the newspaper was to move to a different location. Baschera said he does not know what the motives for the alleged arson attack could be since the paper had not received any previous threats.
After a protest by local journalists, provincial Minister of Coordination Eduardo Cóppola resigned on March 8. Tierra del Fuego Governor Mario Colazo said the fire was a "terrorist attack" and promised to "thoroughly investigate" the incident, the local press reported. No arrests have been made.
