Jonathan Rozen is CPJ’s Deputy Director of Research and Analysis. He also serves as a Senior External Advisor with the International Justice Clinic at the University of California, Irvine School of Law and was a 2025-2026 Technology and Human Rights Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School.
After joining CPJ in 2017, Jonathan spent nearly 10 years on CPJ’s Africa team, reporting, conducting advocacy, and managing emergency responses for journalists across the continent. His investigations have tracked impunity for crimes against journalists, surveillance abuses, efforts to control information during conflict, and the censorship and criminalization of expression online.
Previously, Jonathan worked with the Institute for Security Studies in South Africa and the adelphi research group. He was a U.N. correspondent for IPS News and has written for Al Jazeera English and Daily Maverick, among other outlets. Jonathan holds a master’s degree in global affairs from the University of Toronto and a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from McGill University.
