CPJ offers life-saving assistance to journalists at risk. CPJ continues to help journalists at risk in Somalia, the deadliest country in Africa for the media. For example, we organized the emergency evacuation from Somalia of radio journalist Ahmed Omar Hashi, who had narrowly survived three assassination attempts. “Really, I cannot forget as long as I live how CPJ helped me,” Hashi wrote to us. “I would never have a life without CPJ.” He named his newborn daughter after Sheryl Mendez, our Journalist Assistance program associate.
In an era in which newspapers are disappearing and international news coverage is shrinking, CPJ is fortunate to have the support of media companies and foundations that remain committed to our mission. At the same time, we must increasingly rely on the generosity of individuals like you who value the free exchange of news and ideas.
An increasing portion of our revenue comes from individual gifts. Last year we raised $200,000—about 6 percent of our budget—from individuals. This year we’ve set an even more ambitious goal of $250,000. Your contribution will help us meet this goal. More important, it will make an enormous difference in the lives of frontline journalists who risk their lives and liberty to bring us the news. In order to do their jobs, they need to know that CPJ is standing behind them. And in order to do our work, we need you to support our efforts.
Sincerely,
Joel Simon
Executive Director
P.S. Your tax-deductible gift will be generously matched dollar-for-dollar by CPJ’s Board Chairman Paul Steiger.
