On Wednesday, IDF soldiers shot Palestinian photojournalists Momen Somrain and Rabi al-Munir with rubber bullets while they covered the demolition of a terrorism suspect’s house in the central West Bank city of Ramallah.

Both journalists were hospitalized and in stable condition as of Thursday evening.

“Last month marked the first anniversary of the IDF killing of Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, and Israeli forces’ shootings of two photojournalists with rubber bullets show that her colleagues still work under tremendous risk,” said Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator. “The IDF soldiers who shot Momen Somrain and Rabi al-Munir must be identified and held accountable.”

The killing of Abu Akleh was part of a deadly, decades-long pattern, according to a special report by CPJ. Over 22 years, the Israeli forces have killed at least 20 journalists. Despite numerous IDF probes, no one has ever been charged or held responsible for these deaths. The report includes recommendations to prevent future killings.

New board chair for CPJ

CPJ board chair Jacob Weisberg (Pushkin)

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has announced that Jacob Weisberg has been elected chair of its board of directors. Weisberg, whose term will run from 2023 to 2026, succeeds Kathleen Carroll, who has been a member of the CPJ board since 2008 and chair since 2017.

“When it comes to defending journalists and press freedom, CPJ has shown itself to be effective and essential,” said Weisberg. “As threats continue to mount around the globe, the demand for the organization’s objective research, advocacy, and emergency assistance is greater than ever.”

Journalists Attacked

Dom Phillips

MURDERED

British freelance journalist Dominic “Dom” Phillips went missing on June 5, 2022, during a reporting trip in the Brazilian Amazon with Indigenous issues expert Bruno Pereira. Their burned and buried remains were found with gunshot wounds later that month.

Phillips and Pereira were both killed the morning they went missing. They had been traveling to interview local residents and others for research on a book Phillips was writing. Three people have been charged with their murder.

In at least 8 out of 10 cases, the murderers of journalists go free. CPJ is waging a global campaign against impunity.

The Committee to Protect Journalists promotes press freedom worldwide.

We defend the right of journalists to report the news safely and without fear of reprisal.
