The Committee to Protect Journalists joined the Freedom of the Press Foundation, Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Press Photographers Association, and other organizations in a joint message urging the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) to reaffirm its commitment to the First Amendment at its rescheduled correspondents’ dinner on Friday.
Since the April dinner was postponed, the Trump administration has intensified its attacks on journalists through the use of subpoenas targeting reporters, threats against broadcasters, restrictions on Pentagon press access, plans to shorten visas for foreign journalists, and public attacks on individual reporters.
The message calls on the WHCA to “condemn the Trump administration’s actions from the podium and pledge to fight all attempts by his administration to undermine this core pillar of a functioning democracy.”
