New York, January 9, 2025—The Committee to Protect Journalists was joined by 80 other rights groups and journalists in expressing concern over the continued detention of Sudanese journalist Muammar Ibrahim by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and calling for his release and protection.
Ibrahim has been held since October 26, 2025, following his detention in El-Fasher, North Darfur. Videos circulated by the RSF confirm he remains in custody, but no independent or verifiable information is available regarding his health, legal status, or conditions of detention, as he has largely been held incommunicado.
The statement underscores that journalists are civilians entitled to protection under international humanitarian law and urges all parties to the conflict in Sudan to respect the work and safety of journalists.
