CPJ to release report on the state of press freedom in the European Union

New York, April 13—On April 25, 2023, the Committee to Protect Journalists will release “Fragile Progress”, a report on the current state of press freedom in the European Union (EU).

The EU traditionally has been seen as a model for press freedom and a bastion of democratic norms. Yet threats to press freedom in Europe—including violence, legal harassment and state control of media—have forced EU institutions to find new ways to defend independent media and keep journalists safe.

The report provides a snapshot and analysis of the challenges confronting EU institutions in meeting their commitments to press freedom. It also includes CPJ’s recommendations to the EU and its 27 member states for safeguarding media freedom as the 2024 European elections approach—a critical juncture for the defense of democracy.
