Media suffer winter chill in coverage of Sochi Olympics

Upcoming report looks at restrictions on news coverage in run-up to Winter Games

New York, January 16, 2014–The Committee to Protect Journalists will release a special report on press freedom conditions leading up to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The report will examine how official repression and self-censorship have restricted news coverage of sensitive issues related to Sochi’s host status, such as the exploitation of migrant workers, environmental destruction, forced evictions, and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons. The report will include recommendations for the International Olympic Committee, Russian authorities, and journalists covering the Games.

The report will be released on January 28, 2014.
