CPJ condemns murder of Mexican photographers

New York, May 3, 2012–The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns the murders of Mexican photographers Gabriel Huge and Guillermo Luna Varela, whose bodies were found today in La Zamorana canal in Veracruz state, according to news reports.

“We are deeply troubled by reports of these murders that, coming as they do on World Press Freedom Day, underscore the ongoing crisis in Mexico,” said Carlos Lauría, CPJ’s senior program coordinator for the Americas. “Veracruz has seen a wave of lethal anti-press violence that is sowing widespread fear and self-censorship. Mexican authorities must act now to end the deadly cycle of impunity in crimes against the press.”
