Responding to news that CPJ International Press Freedom Award winner Jiang Weiping successfully reached Toronto early today, we issued this statement…
“Jiang Weiping’s safe arrival in Canada is remarkably good news for him and his wife and daughter, and we are grateful to the Canadian government for extending its assistance. But this kind of good news is rare in China, where we still count at least 28 journalists and online writers behind bars. We hope the Chinese government sees its way clear to releasing them, and moves toward freeing the country’s media,” said Joel Simon, CPJ’s executive director.
