HARASSED

Police accused the managing director of the private daily Today with sedition on July 21, following his arrest and questioning three days earlier. Managing Director Abdulhamid Adiamoh told CPJ that he was arrested on July 17 and spent several hours at police headquarters in Banjul.

Adiamoh was questioned over an article published on July 15 titled “Children dodge school to pick up scrap metal,” according to Gambian media watchdog Media Agenda. Police had visited the Today offices on July 16 demanding to see official papers that authorized the managing director to operate thenewspaper. Adiamoh was able to show all the relevant documents to the police, Media Agenda reported.

No court date has been set for the sedition charges and the newspaper continues to publish, Adiamoh told CPJ.
