The founder and director of a new weekly private newspaper, The Independent, said Ugandan authorities ordered several printing companies on December 14 not to publish the first edition of the publication.

Director Andrew Mwenda told CPJ that the head of the printing company Industrial Graphics Ltd., Nassir Musosi, received a letter from the Ugandan government ordering him not to print The Independent. Mwenda said he was rejected from five other printing companies who received similar directives from the government. The new publication was eventually accepted by a small printing company and the first edition was launched on December 17, Mwenda said.
