Grebenyuk, a reporter for the independent Russian news agency Interfax, was found dead on February 8 in a canal in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent. The cause of death is unknown, but he was last seen on January 27. Russian correspondents working in Tashkent have often been threatened. Grebenyuk had received similar warnings and had previously been attacked.Motive Unconfirmed: CPJ is investigating to determine whether the death was work-related.
