Manuel Cabieses, Punto Final, HARASSED, LEGAL ACTION
Punto Final, ATTACKED
Cabieses, editor in chief of the weekly Punto Final, was charged by a military court with "inciting sedition." Police, armed with a warrant for his arrest, raided his home and Punto Final's offices. Cabieses went into hiding for 18 days while his attorney filed a writ of habeas corpus. The court on Oct. 10 dropped the charges on the grounds that the Santiago Appeals Court in 1995 had absolved Cabieses of the same charges and dismissed the case. The case against Cabieses began in 1991, after he published a front-page cartoon in the Sept. 9 issue depicting then army leader Gen. Augusto Pinochet cleaning his bloody nose with the Chilean flag. The caption, "Cynicism and sadism," alluded to comments made by Pinochet about a secret grave site in which bodies had been buried two-by-two. Pinochet had said, "This represents a savings for the state."
