Pakistan must act to protect journalists

In response to news reports from Pakistan today that journalist Imtiaz Alam was injured in an attack by a gang in Lahore, and that the building housing the Wana Press Club in South Waziristan was leveled in a bomb blast on Thursday, we issued this statement...

"There is growing concern for the safety of journalists in Pakistan amid a surge in attacks apparently by militant groups who cannot abide critical reporting. President Asif Ali Zardari must act swiftly to assert the government's authority and reverse this trend," said Bob Dietz, CPJ's Asia program coordinator.

Conditions of journalists rights are not satisfactory in Pakistan, Govt must facilitate and protect media persons so they may perform their duties without any fear or hurdle. Govt should defend freedom of press and expression. All international Journalists Associations also must raise their voice on this shaky situation.
